about me.

Hello. My name is Vanessa Benton. I am a writer and experimental artist. I’m a TV writer and I’ve written on shows like The Sandman, How To Get Away With Murder, and Fate: The Winx Saga. Outside of TV writing, I write horror and dark fantasy short stories and experimental stories. I’m currently working on a really awesome online experiential story that follows my main character through her “hacked” Iphone videos, photos, and notes apps. It’s called God Bless the Promise Land and you can follow the stories Twitter page here for more updates. I’m also developing a sci-fi anime for Crunchyroll.

I’m originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was born to a mother who was both a teacher and a musician. I grew up with the expectation that I’d be an “Artist.” I grew up playing music, going to live shows, diving into art, dance and acting. I initally attented college at the University of Wisconsin, but, once I realized that I wanted to write for a living, I transferred to NYU Tisch and studied TV and Film. I moved out to LA in 2015 to work as an assistant for a show called In Contempt on BET. I then moved on to work for How to Get Away with Murder as a showrunner’s assistant. I wrote my first episdoe on HTGAWM. From there, I was hired for Netflix’s The Sandman and later Fate: The Winx Saga. In between all of that, I dove into experientimental story telling. I created this website to share my fiction and non-fiction writing.

In 2020, I discovered death work and death doula-ing. I trained under Alua Arthur, one of the most renowned death doulas in the country. I truly want to help serve the dying community — espcially those who are younger. For now, I plan on writing about my death work journey and share it here.
I am repped at 3 Arts Entertainment and The Kaplan Stahler Agency.
